What happens

Robert Taylor as Roger and Barbara Stanwyck as Julie star in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the 1941 film Penny Serenade, broadcast on April 27, 1942. Julie and Roger, a newspaper publisher and his wife, have been married for years and have wanted a child. After a painful loss, they decide to adopt a baby, and the couple's hopes turn toward a new family life. Their journey through the adoption process is met with questions, delays, and an investigation into their home and finances. Julie and Roger face the emotional strain of waiting while holding on to the dream of becoming parents.

A small town and a city apartment above a newspaper office, with earlier scenes in a phonograph shop, a Chinese restaurant, San Francisco, and China.

Characters: Roger Adams, Julie Adams, Applejack, Miss Oliver

Listen for: Julie's memories of the record collection, and the scene where Miss Oliver investigates the Adams' home for the adoption.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
