What happens
Lux Radio Theatre presents National Velvet, a 1947 adaptation starring Mickey Rooney, Elizabeth Taylor and Donald Crisp, first broadcast on February 3, 1947. A young traveler named Mr. Taylor arrives in the village of Sewells, where he has a connection to the family of the butcher Mr. Brown. Velvet Brown, the butcher's daughter, befriends him, and the two bond over horses. When Velvet wins a piebald horse in a village raffle, she sets her heart on racing him in the Grand National. Her family's doubts and the practical costs of the plan put the dream to a difficult test.
The village of Sewells in England, and London

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
