What happens

Jessica Drummond, a widow in Lake Forest, Illinois, struggles to build a life of her own after her husband Paul's death, pressed by her controlling mother to wear black and to consider Frank Everest as a future husband. At a ski lodge at Lake Tahoe she meets Major Scott Landis, and the two begin a tentative relationship that unsettles her sense of herself. Lux Radio Theatre presented this adaptation of the Warner Brothers film on April 21, 1947, with Barbara Stanwick as Jessica and George Brent as Major Landis. The broadcast covers the first two acts and ends with Jessica's uncertain feelings toward the Major still unresolved.

Late summer and winter, 1944 to 1945, in Lake Forest, Illinois, and at a ski lodge at Lake Tahoe.

Characters: Jessica Drummond, Major Scott Landis, Mrs. Drummond, Frank Everest, Jenna, Jim, Kim, Keith

Listen for: Jessica's growing independence in contrast to her mother's insistence on mourning custom, and her first meetings with Major Landis at Lake Tahoe.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
