What happens

Apple Annie, a street vendor on Broadway, has long written letters to her daughter Louise, who lives in Spain, claiming she is a society woman. When Louise announces she is coming to New York to meet her mother and her fiance, Count Carlos Romero, Annie's friend Dave the Dude and his gambling associates decide to stage a convincing show. They install Annie in a borrowed suite at the Hotel Marbury as Mrs. E. Worthington Manville, and they recruit a gentleman named Judge Henry Blake to play her husband. This Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of Damon Runyon's story aired on May 1, 1939, with May Robeson, Warren William, Jean Parker and Guy Kibbee in the leading roles.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
