What happens
Dick Powell stars in this Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of Island in the Sky. Dooley, a veteran pilot with the Army Air Transport Command, is lost after his plane goes down on a frozen Arctic lake while flying in icy weather, and his crew are stranded with dwindling fuel and food. Back at base, Colonel Fuller and fellow pilots such as Willie Moon, McMullen, Stanis and Stutz plan a search across the vast, uncharted territory. Meanwhile Dooley struggles to keep his men hopeful, and the crew try to signal the searchers with a hand-cranked transmitter and a bonfire. The transcript covers only the first part of the episode.
The Arctic wilderness of northeastern Canada and Labrador during World War II, and an Army Air Transport Command base in Maine.
Characters: Dooley, Murray, Stankowski, Frank Kyle, Colonel Fuller, Willie Moon, McMullen, Stanis
Listen for: The crew's attempts to signal the search planes, and the men's struggle to keep their spirits up as hunger and cold set in.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
