What happens
Pip, a young blacksmith's apprentice, is drawn into a dark and tangled story that begins with a frightening encounter with an escaped convict in a village churchyard. Pip later visits the mysterious and embittered Miss Havisham, where he meets her beautiful ward Estella and is unsettled by the strange wedding feast frozen in time. The broadcast is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations, part of the Lux Radio Theatre series, first aired on October 12, 1954, and starring Rock Hudson as Pip and Barbara Rush as Estella. The episode follows Pip's growing ambitions and his hopes for Estella.
Rural England near the marshes, then London, during the 1820s and later, as told in Dickens' Great Expectations.
Characters: Pip, Estella, Miss Havisham, Joe Gargery, Biddy, Mr. Jaggers, Herbert Pocket, Mrs. Joe
Listen for: The first encounter with the convict in the churchyard, Pip's first visit to Miss Havisham's house, and Mr. Jaggers' announcement of Pip's great expectations.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
