What happens
In the North African desert in June 1942, a wounded British corporal, John Bramble, staggers into the town of Sidi Halfaya, where a native hotel proprietor and a French maid, Mousse, hide him from the advancing Germans. The German army takes over the Empress of Britain Hotel, and Bramble must pose as a waiter named Paul Davos to survive. This Lux Radio Theatre production aired on December 13, 1943, adapting the Paramount film Five Graves to Cairo, with Franchot Tone as Bramble and Anne Baxter as Mousse, opposite Erich von Stroheim as Marshal Rommel. The story is still unfolding in this part of the broadcast, as Bramble and Mousse must match wits with the German commander.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
