What happens
Larry Bishop and his wife Louise live in Napoleon, Illinois, where Larry works at Mr. Dingle's hardware store after giving up plans for medical school in Vienna. Their frail daughter Cynthia is kept close by her overprotective parents and her uncle, Dr. Fred McCullen, who insists on routine treatments. When Larry is pressed by his employer and a real estate deal to buy a house, the family's finances and the couple's strained marriage come under pressure. Cynthia, meanwhile, longs for a social life and a chance to sing in the high school operetta. Lux Radio Theatre presents Cynthia, a 1947 play adapted from the Broadway success The Rich Full Life, with Elizabeth Taylor, George Murphy and Mary Astor starring, first broadcast on June 23, 1947.
Napoleon, Illinois, in the years after the Bishops' marriage, through a Thanksgiving season, a cold winter, and a high school in the town.
Characters: Cynthia Bishop, Larry Bishop, Louise Bishop, Dr. Fred McCullen, Ricky Latham, Professor Rosenkranz, Mr. Dingle, Gus Wood
Listen for: Cynthia's wish to join the high school operetta and her first conversation with Ricky Latham.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
