What happens

On the Lux Radio Theatre broadcast of July 6, 1953, Joseph Cotten stars in Cynara, a romance by Mildred Cram. Heather, a lonely Englishman, lives in the West African jungle with Laura, a woman who has followed him there. After a letter arrives from Margaret, the woman he once loved, Heather is shaken by old longings and hurt by his own past. Heather and Laura quarrel bitterly, then slowly reconsider their lives as they attempt to travel back toward the coast through the wilderness.

The West African jungle and river, near the Niger, and a trading post far from the coast

Characters: Heather, Laura, Margaret

Listen for: Heather's reaction to the letter from Margaret, and his bitter exchanges with Laura

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
