What happens
Luigi Vasco, a newly arrived Italian immigrant in America, tries to return a black silk nightgown he has bought as a gift for his mother in Italy. Written in letters to his mother, the story follows his attempts at a department store, where he is persuaded to exchange items and is mistaken for a shoplifter. Pasquale, his talkative friend, keeps urging him into trouble, and the store's rules and staff add to the confusion. The episode is part of the Life with Luigi comedy series, which was broadcast on April 3, 1949, with J. Carrol Naish starring as Luigi and Alan Reed as Pasquale.
Chicago, at a department store and a night school class
Characters: Luigi Vasco, Pasquale, Miss Spalding, Mrs. Schultz, Mr. Brown
Listen for: Luigi's letters to his mother describing his American adventures, and his trouble over returning the nightgown
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
