What happens

Jack Benny plans a double date with guest star Van Johnson, who has been late to rehearsal and balks at the fee Jack proposes. Jack arranges dates for Van and himself with two women, Gertrude and Mabel, and they meet for dinner at Ciro's. Van grows increasingly uneasy about the evening, and the group's outing becomes awkward and lively as drinks, dancing and a restaurant bill pile up. The episode is part of the Jack Benny series, which aired on NBC and CBS Radio, with Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris in the lead cast. The original air date is March 20, 1949.

Rehearsal at CBS studios and the Beverly Hills area, then a restaurant called Ciro's in Los Angeles

Characters: Jack Benny, Van Johnson, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Rochester, Gertrude

Listen for: Van Johnson's reluctance about the double date and Jack's coaxing him along

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
