What happens

Jack Benny and his cast argue on the air about who deserves an Academy Award for acting. Jack insists he has a fine chance, while Phil Harris, Don Wilson and others doubt him, and the talk turns to rival performers such as Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and James Cagney. Mary Livingstone and Kenny Baker join the squabble, and the mood sours as Don storms out to smoke. Visitors and phone calls keep interrupting the show, and the program is taken up with teasing, music and a preview of its next feature, Jesse James.

A radio variety program broadcast from the studio, with the cast trading jokes and banter between musical numbers.

Characters: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Kenny Baker, Don Wilson, Eddie Anderson

Listen for: Jack's claims about his chances at the Academy Award and the cast's teasing responses to them.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
