What happens
Jack Benny spends a quiet evening at home after helping Rochester with the dishes on Rochester's birthday. Friends call with party invitations and phone gags, including a long-distance call from Dennis Day. Benny then settles in the library and opens a mystery novel, A Cup of Coffee, a Sandwich, and Murder, which is read aloud as a lunchroom owner named Charlie Gundlefinger faces two tough visitors late at night. The episode is a Jack Benny program from 1950, broadcast on NBC and CBS Radio, with Mary Livingstone, Eddie Anderson and Phil Harris in the cast.
The Benny household on the evening of Rochester's birthday, later a late-night lunchroom in the novel being read
Characters: Jack Benny, Rochester, Mary Livingstone, Phil Harris, Dennis Day, Richard Widmark, Charlie Gundlefinger, Curly
Listen for: The phone calls from Dennis Day and Phil Harris, and the story Benny reads from the mystery novel
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
