What happens

Archie Davis works as night clerk at the Pageant Hotel, a shabby establishment where he is bored and short of money. An old guest named Ruben Small checks in and leaves a gold-trimmed leather portfolio in the hotel safe, and Archie is tempted by the cash inside. Later that night a switchboard light flashes from room 313, and Archie goes up to find the old man dying. The episode is part of the Inner Sanctum Mysteries series, which was first broadcast on February 19, 1951, starring Larry Hayes.

The Pageant Hotel, an old, run-down hotel with no working elevator, and its night desk and room 313.

Characters: Archie Davis, Ruben Small, Jessica Bruce, Martin Bruce

Listen for: Archie's growing temptation over the portfolio's money, and the strange, lingering expression on the dead man's face.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
