What happens

Ludwig Heller, a waiter at the Avalon Lounge, overhears a woman in a veil hiring a killer to murder wealthy investment broker Guthrie Stewart. Ludwig tears the plot into scraps, pieces the address together and tries to warn Stewart, who only laughs. Captain Laraby of the ninth precinct is pulled into the affair as Ludwig keeps trying to prevent a murder that the police and Stewart refuse to take seriously. The story is part of the Inner Sanctum Mysteries series, first broadcast on July 4, 1949, and is written by John Robert with Everett Sloan in the role of Ludwig.

The Avalon Lounge, a metropolitan restaurant, and the Stewart house in the suburbs outside the city, with a dock at Long Island Sound.

Characters: Ludwig Heller, Guthrie Stewart, Captain Laraby, Ellen Stewart

Listen for: Ludwig's account of overhearing the murder plot and his attempts to warn Guthrie Stewart, which the captain and Stewart dismiss.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
