What happens

A composer's humming haunts Grasso, a survivor of a lifeboat drifting after the sinking of the Santa Margarita off the coast of Maine. Grasso, the ship's mate Smythe, and a perfume manufacturer named Tull shared the raft with Tull's wife Marsha, and Tull's song kept them all on edge through the long calm. Tull and Marsha were lost, and Grasso is now haunted by the melody and by the suspicion that one of the others was responsible. Grasso is a playwright, and his words are sharp and anxious throughout. The story is told in Inner Sanctum fashion, with Raymond Massey not appearing in this episode. The episode is an Inner Sanctum Mysteries broadcast from May 29, 1945, starring Everett Sloane as Grasso.

A life raft in the Atlantic after the sinking of the Santa Margarita, later a lighthouse island off the coast, with scenes in Portsmouth and aboard a Halifax-bound cargo ship.

Characters: Grasso, Smythe, Tull, Marsha, Abraham Davis

Listen for: The melody Tull hums on the life raft, which Grasso cannot escape.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
