What happens
Mark Duffy, a newspaper columnist, plans the murder of theatrical producer Basil Archer, step by careful step. He buys an illegal silenced revolver from a pawnbroker named Krug, establishes an alibi at his hotel, and arranges for Archer's wife Nina to help. Duffy's schedule is tested by rain and by the people around him. The story is told in Inner Sanctum Mysteries, first broadcast on June 4, 1946, with Barry Kroger in the role of Mark Duffy.
New York City, in June, during a week of rain: a pawnbroker's shop, a hotel, the Archers' apartment, and Basil Archer's office above a theatre.
Characters: Mark Duffy, Basil Archer, Nina Archer, Gregory Sutherland, Krug, Ryan, Sergeant Moran
Listen for: The sound of rain and thunder, which Duffy notices as a clue he cannot escape, and the final twist in the theatre office.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
