What happens

Sam Tyler, a small-time criminal, survives a shooting by Nick Fazenda through a mysterious intervention and is sent by an unseen figure called Mr. Whiskers to Chicago. There he is drawn into a scheme involving Trusca, a wealthy man, and Constance, his niece, whom Sam is pressed to marry. Constance's inheritance depends on the marriage, and Sam begins to suspect a hidden purpose behind the arrangement. The story is told through Sam's narration as he tries to understand his role in the plot and the promise he made to change his life. The transcript ends before the full resolution of the events.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
