What happens
Britt Reid, publisher of the Daily Sentinel, sends reporter Mike Axford to check on the neediest families his paper helped last Christmas. Axford finds that several of them have unexpectedly become comfortable, and that their husbands are all in prison for crimes. Reid suspects a connection and grows concerned about the paper's involvement. Meanwhile, Ray Spencer, a nightclub owner under police suspicion over a payroll holdup, seems to be paying the families of prisoners. Reid, working as the Green Hornet with his valet Kato, looks into the payments. This is an episode of The Green Hornet, first broadcast on December 20, 1945.
Mid-1940s city, the offices of the Daily Sentinel, a nightclub, a poor neighborhood basement flat, and police headquarters
Characters: Britt Reid, Mike Axford, Katie, Ray Spencer, Virgil, Maggie Hooker, Kato, Sergeant Burke
Listen for: Reid's suspicion when the list shows families who prospered after their husbands were jailed, and Kato's report on Virgil's visits
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
