What happens
Britt Reid, a young publisher, investigates the Renard Testing Laboratories after fountain pen maker Michael Hammersmith complains that his pen was blacklisted in the firm's free monthly booklet. Reid's reporter Laurie tracks the company, and Reid learns that Renard demands $5,000 from manufacturers to avoid a bad rating. Posing as a government man, Reid visits Renard's office, sees a safe holding large sums of money, and then meets Hammersmith. The Green Hornet, Reid's masked alter ego, and his valet Cato are preparing to act against the racketeers.
A city in the late 1930s, including a newspaper office, a fountain pen maker's office, and the Renard Testing Laboratories' offices.
Characters: Britt Reid, Cato, Michael Hammersmith, Laurie, Renard, Denby, Miss Hanson
Listen for: Renard's threat to Hammersmith that his pen would be called no good unless he paid $5,000, and the booklet's claims of 'OK by Renard Testing Laboratories'.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
