What happens
Britt Reid, a young newspaper publisher, learns from his staff that a classified ad has been selling engagement rings that turn out to be fake stones in gold settings. Axford, his reporter, goes undercover to the apartment where the rings are sold, and the crooks sell him a ring while staying carefully within the law. Reid then turns his attention to a separate political matter involving Lewis Niles, who has resigned from a legislative investigation. Reid and his valet Cato devise a plan to expose the racket and test Niles. This is the first part of the episode, so the story is only partly told here.
The Daily Sentinel newspaper offices, Britt Reid's apartment, and a city apartment on Green Street

Listen for: How the ring racket is run within the law, and what Britt Reid plans to do about Lewis Niles
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
