What happens

Summerfield water commissioner Gildersleeve, newly celebrated as a detective, meets a mysterious young woman on the morning bus and is flattered by her attention. Later she telephones him in apparent trouble, and he rushes to Hogan Brothers Department Store to help her. Hurrying from one encounter to the next, he finds himself caught up in a tense hunt for a package, with a menacing man named Blacky Nolan in pursuit. The Great Gildersleeve, played by Harold Peary, has a story from the Summerfield series, broadcast on NBC on May 4, 1949.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
