What happens
Gildersleeve gets a detective kit from the mail and takes up crime detection as a hobby, to the amusement of his friends. Leroy reports hearing footsteps and an eerie moan from the old Willoughby house, which the town calls haunted. Gildersleeve sets out to prove there is no ghost, runs away in fright, then returns with Commissioner Hooker and Chief Gates, convinced a counterfeiter is hiding inside. The Great Gildersleeve is a radio comedy series, and this episode aired on NBC on April 20, 1949, with Harold Peary in the title role.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
