What happens

Gildersleeve, the water commissioner of Summerfield, is insulted by his wealthy neighbor Bullard, who calls him a nincompoop after a dispute over parking and a fight between their nephews. Gildersleeve decides to sue Bullard for defamation of character and tells the town he will do so. His attempts to find a lawyer and character witnesses go poorly, as friends prove reluctant and Judge Hooker turns out to be unavailable to hear the case. The series, The Great Gildersleeve, first aired on NBC on May 25, 1949, starring Harold Peary. Gildersleeve has been advised to plead his own case in court.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
