What happens
Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, the water commissioner, struggles with his stalled old car in front of his family while his neighbour Mr. Bullard looks on. A used-car salesman named Smiling Sam offers him a borrowed yellow Mercedes convertible to drive for a day, and Gildersleeve enjoys the attention it brings. Word of his apparent wealth spreads through town, and his friends at the Jolly Boys club and neighbour Judge Hooker begin to question where he got the money. Gildersleeve has to keep up the pretence while trying to set things right.
Summerfield, a small American town, in the late 1940s, around the Gildersleeve house and on Main Street.
Characters: Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, Leroy, Marjorie, Birdie, Mr. Bullard, Smiling Sam, Judge Hooker, Chief Gates
Listen for: Gildersleeve's attempts to bluff his way through as a wealthy man while the Mercedes is only on loan.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
