What happens

Gildersleeve, the pompous but good-hearted head of Summerfield's town office, joins a committee to raise money for a new fire engine for the town. The committee is full of petty rivalries, and Gildersleeve clashes with Mrs. Pettibone, who wants to run the show, and with Judge Hooker, who has been sharp with him. Meanwhile, Gildersleeve's niece Marjorie and his nephew Leroy look on, and Leroy makes plain his opinions about his uncle's cooking and comments on his weight. The episode is from the series The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on January 31, 1943, and stars Harold Peary, with Willard Waterman, Lillian Randolph and Lurene Tuttle among the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
