What happens

Gildersleeve gets engaged to his neighbor Adeline Fairchild, but she asks that the engagement be kept secret, and the news spreads anyway. Gildersleeve, seeking a home for the baby girl he has taken in, finds himself the subject of teasing at the office, from the police chief, and from his friends. The story is part of the long-running radio series The Great Gildersleeve, first broadcast on NBC on November 3, 1948, starring Harold Peary. The transcript covers only the first part of the episode, so the later developments are not described here.

Summerfield, a small town, in the home, office and streets of Gildersleeve's neighborhood

Characters: Gildersleeve, Adeline Fairchild, Leroy, Bertie, Bessie, Chief Gates, Judge Hooker, Floyd

Listen for: Gildersleeve's attempts to keep the engagement secret as word keeps spreading, and his reaction when Leila Ransom is mentioned

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
