What happens

Water Commissioner Gildersleeve, frustrated by the city's growing payrolls, decides the mayor should appoint a hard-headed outsider to cut waste in city government. The mayor agrees and names a civic coordinator, Harriet Pickens, a college professor of business administration whom Gildersleeve has already met in the hall. Their first encounters are prickly, and Gildersleeve soon finds that the new appointee has her own plans for the water department. The Great Gildersleeve series, a Harold Peary vehicle carried by NBC, aired this episode on February 20, 1952, with Willard Waterman in the title role and Lillian Randolph among the cast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
