What happens
Gildersleeve arrives at Summerfield's New Year's costume ball expecting to take Eve Fenwick, but she has already accepted an invitation from the gym teacher, Jim, leaving him stung and disappointed. Meanwhile at home Marjorie wants to go to the ball with Jerry Walsh, but her uncle forbids it and she ends up at Francis's house. Gildersleeve, feeling sorry for himself, decides to go anyway in his pirate costume and try his luck. Part of the Great Gildersleeve series, this episode first aired on NBC on January 1, 1947, starring Harold Peary. The transcript covers only the first part of the broadcast.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
