What happens
Fred Allen returns to the town hall for the new season, welcomed by a committee of comic townsfolk, and the program moves through a string of sketches. Allen tries to get into Radio City, a married couple is questioned by a policeman in Washington, and the Yankees' World Series win is reported in mock news items. The show closes with a mystery drama performed by the Mighty Allen Players, in which the meatball king Barkley Rappaport is found dead in his home while listening to the radio. The inspector questions the household staff, and the transcript ends before the case is resolved.
A small-town town hall on the radio, with sketches set in Radio City in New York, a Washington, D.C. street, and the Rappaport home.
Characters: Fred Allen, Portland Hoffa, Harry Von Zell, Peter van Steeden, Kenny Delmar, Minerva Pious, Inspector Bungle, Barkley Rappaport
Listen for: The inspector's questioning in the Rappaport household, as the staff give their accounts of the radio and the three shots heard from the kitchen.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
