What happens
Fred Allen hosts Town Hall Tonight, a live variety hour of music, comedy sketches and amateur acts, broadcast on CBS and NBC in February 1936 with Portland Hoffa, Kenny Delmar and Minerva Pious among the cast. Allen opens the show with a bulletin about a runaway neon sign and then presents a newsreel-style sketch about women serving on a jury, where a deadlocked panel argues over a murder case. A psychology professor attempts to teach a class from his hospital bed by telephone, which leads to garbled connections. A couple's constant quarrels are blamed on eye strain, and a sponsor's listener complains about a laxative. Later, Portland Hoffa joins a women's club planning a Washington's birthday show, and an insurance salesman named Samson Clint pitches accident policies to Allen. The episode closes with a musical quartet and a feud-themed drama set in the Arkansas hills.
The Town Hall studio, with sketches set in a New York jury room, a hospital room, a model American home, a Washington's birthday club rehearsal, and an Arkansas cabin.
Characters: Fred Allen, Portland Hoffa, Kenny Delmar, Minerva Pious, Peter Van Steeden, Harry Von Zell, Samson Clint, Mrs. Trinkett
Listen for: The jury-room newsreel sketch, the professor's telephone lesson, and the insurance salesman's accident-policy demonstration with Allen.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
