What happens

Fred Allen hosts his comedy variety program, which the transcript labels as the Fred Allen Show, with guest Miss Lily, a British musical comedy star who has just arrived in New York. The episode is mostly a run of sketches and gags: Senator Claghorn holds forth on the common cold, the Allen household is full of mishaps, and the host talks with Miss Lily about British radio, where, in her telling, broadcasts include lectures on stuffing field mice. Miss Lily then describes her new musical, Piccadilly, which she plans to stage in London next month, and the rest of the segment covers its plot. The episode also includes musical numbers and a commercial for Bluebonnet margarine.

A radio studio broadcast in New York, with comedy sketches set in Allen's alley and in the hotel where Fred Allen visits Miss Lily.

Characters: Fred Allen, Kenny Delmar, Portland Hoffa, Senator Claghorn, Miss Lily, Mr. Moody, Mrs. Nussbaum

Listen for: Senator Claghorn's cold remedy and the Mrs. Nussbaum cure sketch, and Miss Lily's description of British radio and of her musical Piccadilly.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
