What happens
George Fothergill, a mild and placid little man in an English village, is drawn into an argument at the local bar with a loud skeptic named Toddy Boen. Fothergill insists that a true miracle is something contrary to nature, done by the power of will. To prove his point he points a finger at a lamp, and it burns upside down. Stunned, he begins to test his new power on small wonders, and his neighbors and the constable start to take notice. This episode of the Escape series, first broadcast on December 31, 1950, is adapted from H. G. Wells's story and stars Ben Wright as Fothergill.
An English village, in a bar and on the village lanes, as the story is told by the adaptation.
Characters: George Fothergill, Toddy Boen, Mr. Dingish, Constable Winch, Mr. Maitland, Reverend Heathcliff
Listen for: Fothergill pointing a finger to make a lamp burn upside down, and his first tests of his newfound power on the village.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
