What happens

Harriet Tubman, a young woman enslaved on a Maryland plantation, is injured when she blocks an overseer from beating a fellow slave. During a long illness she dreams of freedom, and after returning to work in the fields she decides to escape. She sets out alone at night, following the North Star, and reaches a farmhouse where a Quaker family hears her plea. This episode of Destination Freedom, a radio series from 1948, dramatizes her early life in the chapter Railway to Freedom.

A Maryland plantation before the Civil War, then the road north and a farmhouse on the Underground Railroad near the Pennsylvania line

Characters: Harriet Tubman, Saul, George, Lewis, Mrs. Torpitz, Hannah, Levi, Master Bo

Listen for: Harriet's inner voices and dreams, and her decision to leave her brothers and head north alone

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
