What happens
George Burns and Gracie Allen are told by their sponsor that they need a guest star to open the fall season. George is reluctant and says the show does not need help, but he sets out to book big names such as Clark Gable, Lionel Barrymore and Ronald Colman. After the stars prove hard to secure, George hires an impersonator named Peter to do their voices. Gracie then reads a script for a hospital drama, and the rehearsal is repeatedly interrupted by the show's own restrictions on radio language and by Peter's hunger. The episode is a comedy built around these mix-ups and the couple's bickering.
Hollywood, California, in the autumn of 1940, in the studio and offices of the Burns and Allen radio show.
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Peter, Bud Houston
Listen for: George's exchanges with the sponsor on the telephone and Gracie's rehearsal of the hospital play script.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
