What happens
George and Gracie decide to invest in a business for their future security, weighing options from a bank to a post office. After a visit to the old actors' home leaves George uneasy, they settle on buying a run-down chicken ranch. Friends Bill and Meredith offer advice, and the couple haggles with the seller over the price. Their new venture quickly runs into trouble, with odd farming methods and mounting costs. This is the Burns and Allen radio comedy, broadcast on March 7, 1946 on CBS and NBC, with Gracie Allen and George Burns in the lead roles.
The Burns home, a local chicken ranch, and the town around them in the 1940s
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Bill Goodwin, Meredith Willson, Mel Blanc
Listen for: Gracie's literal-minded logic about buying a business, and the haggling over the chicken ranch price
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
