What happens

Inspector Summers and Detective Pepper of Scotland Yard investigate the death of Donald Martin, who is shot with a small blue .22 pistol after a quarrel at a cocktail party in London's West End. Martin's lover, Vivian Davis, is arrested and taken in for questioning. The inspector weighs her account of a struggle over the gun against the physical evidence and the testimony of a neighbour. The episode follows the case from the apartment to the courtroom, where the prosecution and defence argue over the evidence. The story is presented as part of The Black Museum, a series narrated by Orson Welles, based on objects held in Scotland Yard's collection.

London, England: a West End apartment, Scotland Yard, and a London courtroom.

Characters: Inspector Summers, Detective Pepper, Vivian Davis, Donald Martin, Mary, Larry, Mrs. Merritt

Listen for: The inspector's questioning of Vivian Davis and the forensic points he raises about the gun, the bruises, and the fingerprints at the trial.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
