What happens

Jimmy Parker and Phyllis Carroll are held up on a dark road near the City of the Dead, a cemetery valley looked after by Mayor Joshua Friday, the caretaker, and his companion Doc. Forced to walk toward the graveyard, the young couple find the caretaker's cottage, where they are given rooms for the night while Doc tells them his own story of retirement and the patients buried there. Strange sounds draw the two older men out into the fog, toward an abandoned church whose bell, they insist, has long been silent. The first part of the episode ends in a fall, a shot and an unexplained trap in the church's study. The Adventures by Morse series, a Carlton E. Morse production, first aired on January 8, 1944.

The City of the Dead, a cemetery in a tiny valley twenty-five miles from a great city, on a moonlit, foggy October night.

Characters: Jimmy Parker, Phyllis Carroll, Mayor Joshua Friday, Doc, Mary, Lamy Fink

Listen for: The sound of the phantom church bell and the clawfoot figure that runs over Doc in the study.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
