What happens
Phillip Carney, master of the schooner Scarlet Queen, is questioned by San Francisco homicide detective Kessel after his chief mate, David Malone, is found dead. Carney admits he signed Malone only five days earlier and says he has never been told where the ship is bound. Kessel reveals that a large sum of money was deposited in Carney's name through a Shanghai firm, and Carney learns that Malone may have been tortured for information about the voyage. Carney then meets a red-haired seaman named Gallagher, who claims knowledge of a hidden destination in the South Pacific. Carney follows a trail of hotel records and bar contacts that leads him to a singer named Helen Curran and a confrontation in her apartment.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
