What happens
Monica Dawson, recovering at the Crestview Sanatorium after a car accident, is visited by Aemon Schlegel, a cyclist who claims he witnessed what happened the night her husband, Ben Kittredge, died. Through a flashback, the story follows how Monica met the older Ben in a San Francisco cocktail lounge, quickly won his proposal, and grew close to his nephew Brad, heir to the Kittredge steamship fortune. Schlegel now threatens to reveal what he saw, and Monica must decide how to protect her position and her plans.
