What happens
Paul Vertell, a wealthy man of modest birth, arrives at the Cypresses, an old Louisiana plantation owned by the Devereaux family, to claim the estate after acquiring its debts. He confronts the elderly owner, Robert Devereaux, who warns that the land's curse will destroy whoever takes it. Devereaux dies suddenly that evening, and Vertell becomes master of the estate. Anne Martin, the housekeeper, is friendly and helpful, and the two grow close. Strange warnings and eerie omens follow Vertell as he settles in, and the local villagers refuse to have anything to do with him. The Whistler, a narrator, tells this story of revenge set in the bayou country of 1944, a broadcast of The Whistler series on 1944-07-23.
