What happens

Christopher Daniels, an English professor in New Haven, is unhappily married to Blanche when his old friend Neil Baldwin visits and asks for a lift to New York. A sudden impulse leads Chris to drive him there, but a fire at their hotel kills Neil, and Chris finds Neil's briefcase containing a ticket to Bermuda and a large sum of money. Chris is pulled toward taking Neil's identity, and the Whistler series, sponsored by Signal Oil, presents the story on its radio program. The first part of the episode follows Chris on Bermuda, where he meets Dorothy Gilbert and begins to wonder what to do next.

New Haven, New York City, and Bermuda, around 1949

Characters: Christopher Daniels, Neil Baldwin, Blanche, Dorothy Gilbert, Jim Mason

Listen for: Chris's struggle over whether to take on Neil Baldwin's identity, and the moment he finds the briefcase and realizes Neil has died.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
