What happens

Amy Clark grows bored with her husband Ralph and begins to consider how she might leave him while keeping their comfortable home, bank account and insurance policy. Meanwhile the town is gripped by the so-called doorbell killer, and Amy starts to use the rumours about her neighbours to shape suspicion around Ralph. Ralph grows jittery, carries a pistol, and is questioned after a reporter, Haley, comes calling. Amy's plan takes shape as a night at the Walkers' bridge party draws near. The Whistler is a radio mystery series, and this episode aired on March 11, 1946.

A residential neighbourhood in an American city, with the Twin Oaks district over the hill, during a wave of doorbell murders.

Characters: Amy Clark, Ralph Clark, Mrs. Gibson, Haley, Chief Henderson, Harry Walker, Roman Joseph Grimes, Sergeant Ransom

Listen for: Listen for how Amy's remarks to her neighbours turn suspicion toward Ralph, and for Haley's questions about the killer and the pistol.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
