What happens
Ed Bliss, a bricklayer, is married to Janet and has just been abandoned after a quarrel, when she walks out on him. Janet has gone to her mother's house, but Ed finds she never arrived there. Janet's stepfather, Joe Alden, appears nervous and evasive when Ed visits, and Ed grows uneasy about the house and what it hides. Joseph Cotton stars as Ed in this episode of Suspense, first broadcast on September 14, 1944, and presented by Roma Wines. The story unfolds as Ed pursues his suspicions, drawing in a detective and a bus driver while he tries to find his missing wife.
A small town and its outskirts, including the Blisses' house, a bus station, and the Alden house in West Hampton.
Characters: Ed Bliss, Janet Bliss, Joe Alden, Detective Stillman, Bert, Mrs. Orland
Listen for: Pay attention to the details Ed notices about the Alden house, especially the painted room and the brick wall out front.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
