What happens
A writer named Amy Sayers visits a remote railway cutting and meets a lonely signalman, who tells her he has seen a figure at the red danger light by the tunnel. The figure covers its eyes and waves its arms, and the signalman says it has appeared before terrible accidents on the line. Amy tries to explain away his fears through reason and psychology, and she sets out to test whether the figure can be seen at all. This adaptation of the Charles Dickens story is presented as part of the Suspense series, first broadcast on February 15, 1959, with Helen Rube as the lead.
A railway cutting with a tunnel, a red signal light and a signalman's shack, at dusk.
Characters: Amy Sayers, The signalman
Listen for: The signalman's account of the figure at the red light, and Amy's attempts to rationalise it.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
