What happens

Suspense presents the play The Palmer Method, starring Ed Gardner in a dramatic role unlike his usual part. Joe Palmer, a New York forger hiding from the police, joins the Spanish loyalist army in Barcelona and boards a train to Madrid with a fellow volunteer, George Padway. During the journey Palmer learns Padway is an English gentleman who has come to fight the fascists, and they talk about Madrid. When bombs strike the train, Palmer finds himself with Padway's papers and must decide how to use them. The story follows Palmer as he takes on another man's identity in a city under siege.

Spain during the Spanish Civil War, on a train bound for Madrid and later in Madrid itself, with a flashback to New York in 1944-era wartime politics

Characters: Joe Palmer, George Padway, Elena Rivianco

Listen for: Palmer's narration explaining how he came to be on the train, the bombing of the train, and his meeting with Elena in Madrid

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
