What happens

Anthony Lass joins Dr. Messenger on an expedition into the Amazon jungle to find a buried city, but after their native guides desert them, Messenger drowns at a falls. Lass is rescued by a solitary man named Mr. Todd, who nurses him back to health. Todd asks Lass to read aloud to him from Charles Dickens, the only books he owns, and the two begin reading together. Lass soon grows uneasy about his host's evasive answers about the past and his own chances of leaving. This 1947 Suspense play stars Richard Kean and Joseph Kearns and was written by Evelyn Waugh.

The Amazon jungle, a remote village and riverside home in South America

Characters: Anthony Lass, Dr. Messenger, Mr. Todd, Barnabas Washington

Listen for: Mr. Todd's evasive answers about Barnabas Washington and why he stayed in the jungle

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
