What happens
Suspense presents Overture in Two Keys, first broadcast January 16, 1947, starring Joan Bennett. Music student Mark Allen arrives in Brooksville, California, to study with the orchestral conductor Ira Whitmer, whose wife Fran becomes drawn to the young man. Ira's frustrations over his deafness and his dependence on Fran shape the household, while Mark and Fran grow closer. Their relationship strains the marriage and raises questions about Ira's safety and the events leading up to his death. The story follows Fran's perspective through her marriage to Mark and her growing unease about what has happened and what may come next.
Brooksville, California, and the Pasadena station, with a later scene at the Hollywood Bowl
Characters: Fran Whitmer, Ira Whitmer, Mark Allen
Listen for: Fran's narration as she reflects on the events that led to Ira's death and her uneasy marriage to Mark
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
