What happens

Ginger Allen, a dancer at the Joyland dance hall off Broadway, learns that her friend Julie has been found murdered in her room. Police detectives suspect a killer who has struck dance hall girls before, and they assign a detective named Nick to protect Ginger. Ginger is uneasy about the gaps in his story and about the calm way he watches her. Presented on the anthology series Suspense, the episode was broadcast on January 13, 1944, and stars Lucille Ball.

A Broadway dance hall called the Joyland in the 1940s, and the streets around it at night.

Characters: Ginger Allen, Julie, Marina, Max, Nick, Marino, Mom, Laverne

Listen for: The recurring tune "Poor Butterfly" and the detail of the dime-a-dance tickets Ginger keeps in her pocket.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
