What happens

In the Arctic, Captain Jonathan Blake and his first mate Gerald Stewart sail the Jessica northward in search of Sir John Franklin and his lost ships, the Erebus and Terror. Stewart keeps a log of the voyage, and the crew wins help from Eskimos and ice pilot Patrick Hanson. Dropped off in a lead of ice, the ship is trapped as the seasons turn and men fall ill and die. Radio's Suspense, starring John Stevenson, presents this tale of an Arctic rescue. The original air date was January 31, 1956.

The Arctic, from New York and Greenland through Baffin Bay and the Canadian Arctic islands to ice-bound waters near King William Island in the 1850s.

Characters: Jonathan Blake, Gerald Stewart, Patrick Hanson, Lady Franklin, Miss Gracroft, Halliday, Sir John Franklin

Listen for: Stewart's ship's log entries and the discovery of Franklin's written note in the ship's wreckage.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
